OkoBay - Vegan ice cream review
Hello :)
Today we have something very exciting to write about, at least exciting for us. We tried a new brand of vegan ice cream, called OkoBay, there were three different flavours: chocolate, coconut and mango. Obviously we had to try them all, because how else we could give an accurate review.
So first and foremost, the ice cream is made of cocnut milk and it is dairy free, gluten free and soy free, but in the label it did say that it might contain small amounts of gluten and nuts. It was quite a pricey ice cream, we were originally going to buy another vegan ice cream, but since it was all sold out, then we opted for this one and I must say we weren't disappointed.
I'll talk about all three flavours and our thoughts on them individually, lets start with the most traditional flavour - chocolate. It had 130 kcal per 100 ml, of which 8,3 g was fat (57%), 7,5 saturated fats, 13,7 g of carbohydrates (42%), 9,7 g sugar and 1,1 g of protein (1%), so macronutrient wise maybe not the best option, a bit too high in fat (daily recommendation is to get 25%-35% of energy from fat) and regular ice cream (made of dairy) usually has a lower percentage of fat and higher of protein, but as a sweet treat it's ok to have so long the rest of the meals balance it out. Anyway about the ice cream itself, it was actually very good, if you had told me that it was dairy based I would'ev believed you, it was a very high quality chocolate ice cream, it was creamy and delicious. When you have it individually then you can slightly taste the coconut. but it's not overpowering and the ice cream isn't too sweet either, which we found positive, since some people have found that vegan ice creams tend to be too sweet.
Next up coconut flavoured ice cream, as Kai said it's difficult to find good coconut ice cream so she had very high demands for it, but even she was satisfied although she has had better cocnut flavoured ice cream. The macros were: 130 kcal per 100 ml, of which 8,5 g was fat (57%), 7,7 saturated fats, 14,1 g of carbohydrates (43%), 10,2 g sugar and 0,5 g of protein (less than 1%). So the same story I said about the previous one also goes for this one. Flavour wise it was very nice, not too sweet either and the taste of coconut was very enjoyable, one of the best coconut ice creams that I've had. It was also very creamy and didn't melt too fast.
Last, but defininitely not least, Mango flavoured ice cream, it seemed like the most interesting and also scariest out of the three, I've never had Mango ice cream before and neither has Kai. Nutrients were: 123 kcal per 100 ml, of which 8 g was fat (58%), 7,2 saturated fats, 13,4 g of carbohydrates (42%), 8,5 g sugar and 0,7 g of protein (less than1%). So all three have roughly about the same macros. The Mango one was a pleasant surprise, it tasted very good, I've had mangoes before and honestly I thought the ice cream tasted better. It wasn't too sweet either and was very creamy, also a bit different in texture, it was slightly airier. We would probably choose this one as our favourite although all three were very good.
So in conclusion, we would recommend all of these three flavours and this general brand, it tasted good and high quality, definitley worth the price.
Have a nice weekend,
Kaiela :)
